Estimated total US$3,652 for 2 travellers

Customize this trip
The request

“7 days in Portugal in May for our anniversary. We love food, old towns and the coast. Mid-range hotels, not too rushed.”

Why this plan

  • You said “not too rushed”, so there are just two hotels: Lisbon, then Lagos by the sea.
  • For your anniversary: a fado dinner in Alfama and a golden-hour boat trip to the Ponta da Piedade sea caves.
  • Old towns first, coast second, so the trip ends on beach days instead of a rush to the airport.
  • Pena Palace is a timed entry first thing in the morning, before the tour buses arrive.

Questions & answers

How do I plan a trip step by step?

Pick where and when you want to go, set a budget, then book flights and a place to stay. Next, plan each day: the must-see places first, grouped by area so you are not criss-crossing the city, with time for meals and rest. Finally add travel insurance, an eSIM or data plan, and any visas or entry forms. Our free AI trip planner does the day-by-day part in about a minute.

How do I make a travel itinerary for free?

Write down your dates, the places you want to see and how you will get between them, then fit them into days with times. Or describe your trip in your own words to a free AI trip planner and get a day-by-day itinerary with times, routes and costs, which you can change as often as you like.

How much should I budget for a trip?

Add up flights, accommodation, food, local transport, activities and travel insurance, then keep about 10% extra for surprises. Flights and accommodation are usually the biggest costs, so your dates and the type of hotel change the total most.

How far in advance should I book flights and hotels?

As a rule of thumb, book about 1 to 3 months ahead for trips within North America and 2 to 6 months ahead for international trips. Book earlier for Christmas, New Year, spring break and July to August, when prices rise and the best options sell out.

Do I need travel insurance?

It is strongly recommended. Provincial health plans in Canada cover little outside the country, and US Medicare generally does not cover care abroad, so a medical emergency can be very expensive. Many policies also cover trip cancellation, delays and lost baggage. Check what your credit card already includes.

What should I do if my travel plans change?

Check the cancellation policy of each booking first: many hotels and some fares allow free changes up to a set date. Change or cancel as early as you can, keep every confirmation email, and contact the company you booked with. Travel insurance may cover costs you cannot get back.
