> Prague Christmas markets 2026: opening dates and hours, mulled wine and ham prices, tourist traps to avoid, where to stay and a simple 3-day plan.

Few cities do Christmas like Prague. Gothic spires, a giant tree in Old Town Square, the smell of mulled wine and roasting ham, and carols echoing off 600-year-old buildings: it feels like stepping into a snow globe. This guide covers everything you need for Christmas in Prague 2026: when each market opens, what to eat and what it costs, how to avoid the classic tourist traps, and a simple 3-day plan.

## Prague Christmas markets 2026 at a glance

The two big markets, in **Old Town Square** and **Wenceslas Square**, open on **Saturday 28 November 2026** and run until **6 January 2027**, every day from **10 am to 10 pm**. Entry is free; you only pay for food, drinks and gifts.

| Market | 2026 dates | Hours | Good to know |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Old Town Square | 28 Nov 2026 – 6 Jan 2027 | 10 am – 10 pm | The famous one: giant tree, stage, best atmosphere. Shorter hours on 24 Dec (10 am – 2 pm) |
| Wenceslas Square | 28 Nov 2026 – 6 Jan 2027 | 10 am – 10 pm | Five minutes’ walk from Old Town, busy and lively |
| Peace Square (Náměstí Míru) | 20 Nov – 24 Dec 2026 | 10 am – 8 pm | The locals’ favourite, in front of a beautiful church; better prices |
| Republic Square | 25 Nov – 24 Dec 2026 | From 10 am | Next to the Municipal House, handy for shopping |
| Tyl Square | 26 Nov – 24 Dec 2026 | 10 am – 6 pm | Small and relaxed, in Vinohrady |
| Kampa Island | Expected 2 Dec 2026 – 4 Jan 2027 | Not yet announced | Pretty riverside setting below Charles Bridge |
| Prague Castle | No market | — | The castle hasn’t held a market since 2022; ignore older guides that list it |

**Tree lighting:** the Old Town Square tree is planned to be lit on **Saturday 28 November 2026 at about 4 pm**, the market’s opening day. Arrive by 3 pm for a good spot, and check the final time closer to the date.

**Tip:** the neighbourhood markets (Peace Square, Tyl Square, Republic Square) close for the season on **24 December**, while the two big ones stay open into January.

## What to eat and drink

- **Svařák (mulled wine):** the taste of a Prague December. Expect about **80–120 CZK** a cup, plus a **50 CZK deposit** for the souvenir mug at most stalls. Keep the mug as a memento or hand it back for your deposit.
- **Medovina (honey wine) and grog:** warm alternatives if mulled wine isn’t your thing.
- **Pražská šunka (Prague ham):** roasted on a spit and carved to order. It’s delicious but **sold by weight (per 100 g)**, and vendors often cut 200–300 g without asking, which can mean a bill of **400–600 CZK** for one plate. Ask for “100 grams” and the total before they cut.
- **Klobása (grilled sausage)** with mustard and bread: the classic market lunch.
- **Smažený sýr (fried cheese)** in a bun: comfort food Czech-style.
- **Trdelník:** the spiral pastry you’ll see everywhere. It’s a tourist favourite rather than an old Czech tradition, and the ice-cream-filled versions are pricey, so try one for fun, but don’t fill up on it.

## Local tips

- **Carry cash.** Many stalls take cards, but not all. Small notes and coins also help for public toilets, which charge a small coin fee.
- **Check the price before ordering by weight**, especially ham.
- **Go on a weekday, or early.** Monday to Thursday is calmer; mornings are best with children and strollers.
- **Watch your bag and phone** near the tree and the stage, where crowds are thickest.
- **Step-free metro stations** for the markets are Můstek, Muzeum and I. P. Pavlova. Staroměstská, Náměstí Míru and Náměstí Republiky are not step-free.
- **Christmas Eve is the big day in Czech homes.** Families eat fried carp and potato salad on 24 December, and many restaurants close early, so book dinner ahead if you’re in town that night.

## Weather and what to pack

December in Prague is cold: daytime highs usually hover around **0–3 °C**, and nights dip below freezing. Snow is possible but not guaranteed. Pack a warm coat, a hat, gloves and comfortable waterproof shoes for the cobblestones; you’ll be outdoors for hours.

## Getting there from Canada

In winter, flights from Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver to Prague (Václav Havel Airport, PRG) usually connect once through a European hub such as Frankfurt, Munich, Amsterdam, Paris, London, Vienna or Zurich. From the airport, the Airport Express bus, city buses linked to the metro, or a taxi will get you to the centre in about 30–45 minutes. Book early: December weekends are among the busiest of the year.

## Where to stay

| Area | Best for | Note |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Old Town (Staré Město) | Walking straight out to the main market | Most atmospheric, and most expensive |
| Lesser Town (Malá Strana) | Romance, quiet evenings | Below the castle, across Charles Bridge |
| New Town (Nové Město) | Value close to Wenceslas Square | Good transport links |
| Vinohrady | Living like a local | Near Peace Square market; cafes and better prices |

## A simple 3-day plan

- **Day 1, Old Town:** arrive, check in, then the Old Town Square market as the lights come on. See the Astronomical Clock strike the hour, and have dinner in a cellar restaurant.
- **Day 2, Castle and Lesser Town:** Prague Castle and St Vitus Cathedral in the morning, walk down through Lesser Town, cross Charles Bridge at sunset, then Kampa Island and an evening at Wenceslas Square.
- **Day 3, the locals’ side:** the Peace Square market in Vinohrady, a winter walk in Letná or Vyšehrad for city views, and a classical Christmas concert in one of the Old Town churches.

With more time, add a day trip to **Kutná Hora** (about an hour by train) or the fairy-tale town of **Český Krumlov**.
